Horse-riding tours in the magical East fjords
In the summer 2024 we offer again some long horse-riding tours with a free running herd, right from Geirastaðir into the close by East fjords.
We are a small family business and offer small groups, good, fresh horses and a beautiful, largely untouched nature.
The participants in the tours are welcome to help actively in the wrangling and keeping together of the free-roaming herd - a very special experience.
Our riding tours lead directly from our farm Geirastaðir to the nearby Eastern fjords.
The region around Borgarfjördur eystri ( tour 1 + 2 in July and midnight sun tours in June ) is known for its magical nature. The trails of the Víknaslodir lead over imposing rhyolite-colored mountain ranges to the abandoned fjords Breiðavík and Húsavík with black lava sand and friendly green valleys up to Lodmundarfjördur, one of the loneliest and most enchanting fjords in East Iceland. On the way we visit the puffin colonies in the small fishing village Bakkagerdi and make evening rides to the beach.
Our 9-day riding tour to Vopnafjörður ( tour 3 in August ) takes us on a varied route from our farm Geirastaðir in the fascinating mountains of the Vopnafjörður Region. On old postal routes along the glacial river Jökulsá, many hours on the lonely plain Smjörvatnsheiði, through numerous small rivers to the beautiful turf house museum Bustarfell, on horseback along the Þverágil gorge with colorful mountain formations, along the sea past the fascinating waterfall Gljúfurárfoss and finally over the Hellisheiði mountain pass in several stages back to Geirastaðir.
